Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is an official F1 safety car

The most powerful and admirable F1 Safety Car will start in a new season of Formula-1. New Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will provide with maximal safety on F1 races. This car will take plcae intead of SL Mercedes Benz 63 AMG. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is well equipped for all F1 requires. This car has 6.3-liter V8 engine with 571 hp of total power and 650Nm of torque. SLS accelerates till 100 km/hr in 3.8 seconds.


Ability to show fast time of round race is one among the most important criteria, because tires and brakes of following F1 car will cool and engines will may overheat. One of determinants is a unique conception: aluminum frame which is providing with low weight (1620 kg).

AMG V8 power unit was placed especially low. This will low center of gravity. New seven-speed gearbox with twice clutch helps for mass distribution (47% – front part, 53% – rear part).

SLS has very good sport AMG running gear. Aluminum axles with independent suspension on a double transversal wishbone arms provide with perfect dynamic with good maneuverability, temperate inertness.

Optimized flashing light with a view to aerodynamics

F1 safety car differs from serial SLS due to F1 logo, carbon side mirrors and character flashing light with TV-camera. Flashing lights are placed on new carbon air intake. Antiwing spoiler pulls out automatically if speed will be more than 120 km/hr and in cooperation with diffuser gives necessary hold-down on a rear axle. Led are in charge to make all function in new flashing lights. They differs from traditional incandescent lamps with faster action and lower power consumption.

Two green flashing lights turn on when safety car appears in the middle of race and has to overtake all F1 cars. After SLS AMG took first place ahead orange flashing lights turn on forbidding all overtakes for all F1 cars. Stroboscopes on headlights and rear lights do not have this function and work all time during a race. Special license plate with «Safety-Car» inscription and 700 diodes will give additional safety at night and rainy weather. There is a camera on the left of license plate.

Functional interior

Sport AMG seats decorated with black leather and six-point safety belts provide with optimal side support. There are four color buttons on a right side of AMG DRIVE UNIT. These buttons activate different light functions and alarm noise. Multifunctional AMG steering wheel has 370 mm of diameter. Seven speeds turn by metal understeering switches. Two central displays were integrated for situation monitoring. There are radio communication elements on the left and right sides of lower display in order to contact with the management.
