
Once upon a time M-Class created a background of a new format of multifunctional off-road vehicle. Customers were waiting for the third generation of Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The main quality is a low fuel consumption. It is really difficult to object to this argument while fuel prices keep changes. Mercedes reorganized fully all engine line for M-Class in order to reach necessary result. Now it consists of two diesel and one gasoline engines.
Mercedes ML 250 Bluetec 4Matic with diesel power unit and 204hp is a basic version. Another diesel is Mercedes ML 350 BlueTec 4Matic with 258hp. The most powerful version is ML 350 4Matic BlueEfficiency with gasoline heart and 306hp of power. Lower diesel ML 250 consumes 6 liter per 100 km. This vehicle is able to reach 1 170 km after only one fuelling! If it is not enough Mercedes company will offer changing 93-liter tank instead of 70-liter one. It will be possible to achieve 1 500 km. ML 350 consumes more fuel (6.8 liters per 100 km), thus fuelling will be more often. In terms of number of kilometres travelled it takes about 1 030 and 1 370 km (with 93-liter tank). Gasoline engine needs about 8.5 liter every 100 km. 78-liter tank will provide with 920 km of travelling, optional 93-liter one will be enough during 1 090 km.
Engine evolution by Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes company promises to supply all models with BlueTec. The main focus is lowering of engine volume without power loss. Purification system of exhaust gases creates lower resistance against gas stream. Mercedes ML 350 BlueTec has modified 3-liter V6 engine which fulfils Euro 6. Special LDS system is used inside it. This system was used first in 2005 on AMG engines. The main idea of LDS is to create a special layer on cylinder walls in order to reduce inside engine friction. The main qualities of gasoline M-Class are direct injection, fast ignition and a new graduate combustion process.
M-Class and ecology
Germans think about environment. Thus Mercedes M-Class will have some ecological systems. They are start-stop system, 7-level automatic gearbox, bearings and reducers with lowered friction, electric amplifier. Even gearbox oil will became warm faster till work temperature and be conducive to lowering of fuel consumption. From now fuel, water and oil pumps will turn in when need it. Analogical situation with air condition compressor. Engine literally gets rid of any ballast. Engineers spent a lot of time in air tube. Light-alloy wheel disks, side mirrors, engine and bottom protection, side sills and spoiler received modification in the name of fuel saving. Besides this good aerodynamics lower wind noise on a speed.
Off-road talents
Off-road package of M-Class has automatic mode for everyday use, two additional programs for bad roads and three highway programs (winter, sport and drive with trailer). This package also has modernized bottom protection and increased road clearance till 285 cm. These things give ability to get over ford with 600 mm of depth. Besides there are 9 airbags, Attention Assist, Pre-Safe safety system, flat tire warning, brake assist, adaptive rotary light, parking assistant, Night View Assist, speed limiter, blind zone control.
